CBS was established in 1928, when founder William Paley purchased 16 independent radio stations and christened them the Columbia Broadcast System. Today, with more than 200 television stations and affiliates reaching virtually every home in the United States, CBS's total network lineup was watched by more than 130 million people a week during the 2012/2013 season. The Network has the #1 drama/scripted program, NCIS; #1 sitcom, THE BIG BANG THEORY; #1 newsmagazine, 60 MINUTES; and #1 daytime drama, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. Its programming arms include CBS Entertainment, CBS News and CBS Sports.
This CBS Television Network (CTN) position is embedded within the CBS News Division (CND).
The Closed Caption Coordinator works with the CBS WEEKEND NEWS, CBS THIS MORNING - SATURDAY and CBS SUNDAY MORNING as a liaison to the outside vendors of closed captioning services to CBS. This role requires the ability to handle strict deadlines and work independently in a live Network television news programming environment with precision and accuracy. While Closed Captioning is the first responsibility, this position also provides support functions for CND.
The primary duties include:
Provision of preparatory information, to the extent available, to outside caption service providers in advance of broadcast, such as show scripts, lists of proper names (people and places), song lyrics used in the program, rundowns and other available relevant material.
Monitor real-time live (e.g., Eastern time zone feed) and pre-recorded captioning program streams (e.g., repeat feeds to Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones) to determine presence of accurate captions.
Assist outside captioning service providers and other relevant CBS internal operating units with breaking news (e.g., CBS News Special Reports) which requires closed captioning and any updates or changes to repeat feeds. Also contact caption service providers promptly if there is a caption loss or obvious compromise of captions.
Provide support to the CTN as needed, including editorial, operational, research and breaking news related assignments when Captioning workflow allows.
Act as back-up to Manager, Captioning and Video Description for coverage of the Sunday NFL on CBS broadcasts and CBS EVENING NEWS, when necessary.
* * Four year college degree in a related major (e.g., Journalism, Communications or English)
0-2 years of related work experience preferred but recent college graduates with relevant internship experience also okay to apply.
This role requires a variable hours work schedule (morning through evening) on Wednesday through Sunday, working holidays and overtime with short notice.
Prior news related experience in production, editorial and/or operations functions at a television network, local affiliate or at a cable network is also helpful.
Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential.
Good PC skills are also required.
