Division Overview:

The Engagement engineering team designs, develops and maintains both user-focused and externally facing content syndication platforms for CNET.com and other CBSi brands. Our team aims to increase engagement with our sites by building user-centric products like forums, profile pages, commenting systems and customized content alerts. We also develop solutions for syndicating our premium content to external content delivery platforms like Apple News and Facebook Instant Articles.

Role Details:

  • We are looking for a talented Associate Software Engineer to join our engineering team. This position is based in Louisville and assumes normal working hours in the Louisville office. You’ll be working with a small group of engineers located in SF and Louisville to design, build, and maintain live site features and backend platforms for sites across the CBS Interactive tech portfolio, including CNET.com, ZDNet.com and TechRepublic.com

  • The position offers ample opportunity to grow as an engineer and work directly with our product teams to build new features and services

  • The position offers opportunity to work on both backend (data flows/APIs) and front-end (UI) services and solutions

Your Day-to-Day:

  • As an associate engineer, you will be given specific development tasks as part of larger business initiatives. Once familiar with the code base, you will be provided additional opportunity to take on and drive a project through the engineering delivery lifecycle from requirements gathering to design, implementation, QA/UAT and LIVE deploy

  • You will be using agile-based development methodologies and project management software solutions

  • You will work with product managers to understand their requirements and attain verification from them on key deliverables

  • The core technical stack you will work on consists of PHP, Symfony, MySQL, SOLR and Javascript/HTML. We also have some back-end services written in Java

  • You will also have the opportunity to work with trending technologies such as container solutions (Docker) and will play an active role in our migration to the Google Cloud Platform

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Business project development: develop new functionality and features for your business partners based on our LeadGen Roadmap

  • Community - includes our custom Forums platform, User Profile pages and third-party commenting platform integration

  • Syndication - building solutions for syndicating our content to external platforms while minimizing latency

  • Notifications - includes email-based Alerts sent to users on event triggers, managing sub/unsub and delivery of Newsletters and the development of a real-time notification center with front-end integration

  • Stability and Growth - develop monitoring metrics that will allow us to track progress against Key Performance Indicators and ensure maximum stability of our platforms

  • Containers and Microservices - involves the containerization of legacy applications and development of microservices to replace monolithic apps

  • Cloud - Explore and migrate existing systems and services to Google Cloud Platform

  • Team - maintain documentation for engineers and peers, participate in knowledge sharing sessions and drive new technical solutions/approaches

QUALIFICATIONS:

What you bring to the team:

You have--

  • BS Computer Science, Engineering, a related technical degree, or equivalent professional experience

  • Proven technical acumen and experience across related technologies for high traffic web sites, web applications in PHP, and Relational Database Query (JavaScript/JQuery, PHP, HTML5, AJAX, MySQL, Unix/Linux)

  • Experience developing in Java a plus

  • Enthusiasm for both backend and front-end technical development

  • Interest in exploring new technologies

  • Past participation in open source projects a big plus

You may also have--

  • Experience at an online company in digital media or content creation

  • GCP/AWS solutions experience

  • Container technology experience
